How do get hungry for food? You start talking about it or thinking about it. You may have just eaten not that long ago, but the fact that I’m even writing about food you’re probably getting hungry right now. It doesn’t take much to stir up a hunger in people, and that’s why reklama is so powerful. Marketing companies can put up a reklama about food, and it starts making people hungry. When people start thinking about something (like food) it stirs up a desire.
God has put a piece of eternity inside each of us, and it longs for Him. We are body, soul, and spirit. We are created beings, and we were created to be with God. That’s why people are so driven to fulfill themselves. Some do it with work, some do it with families, some do it with shopping, being busy or with a relationship. Even as children, we crave to want to worship something, and know about a god. There’s something in us as humans, that we are so driven to be satisfied by something. King David said:
As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? (Psalms 42:1-2 NIV)
I remember being so hungry for God as little girl, and had a longing in me to know God. It wasn’t until I was in middle school that I was filled with the Holy Spirit, and experienced God’s presence. It made the longing in me grow worse, and put a drive in me to have more of God. Unfortunately I longed for other things too, and thought those things would satisfy me. Instead, I ended up hurting myself, and getting entangled in darkness. Though when I began to feed myself on the presence of God, his Word, and doing things for him did I begin to find peace in my soul.
I learned how to stir up my hunger for God, and found out how to satisfy it. I would listen to revival tapes, and CD’s. I would listen to testimonies, and stories of people’s experiences in the presence of God. I would listen to worship music that focused on Jesus, and watch DVD’s about revivals of the past. In addition I would cry out to God, and ask for my hunger to be stirred up for Him. All these things would remind me of God’s presence, and stir that desire within me. My friend Jeremy Weedman of World Revival Church has this great quote; “it’s really revival when it’s the most about Him.” That is when we as Christians are the most satisfied, and our hunger for God is fulfilled. It’s a place where time stops, our problems disappear, we are empty of ourselves, and Jesus has center stage in our lives.
God promises that as we seek Him with our whole hearts, we will find Him. Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be satisfied. Those who draw near to God, will find that God is drawing near to them. He’s not that far away, just pass the tips of your fingers. If you find yourself trying to satisfy yourself, yet still feel empty, it’s your soul telling you that you are hungry for God. Put the pause button on your life, and make room for God. If you can feed yourself with regular food, how much more should you feed your Spirit man with spiritual food?
